FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and you have made the decision to change electricity and gas providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new electricity and gas provider provides you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means that you have ten days to cancel the process and go back to your current energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply electricity and gas to your premises even after you switch over to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity and gas bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity and gas directly from the distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be sure that your electricity and gas supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the switchover will not go ahead until your old provider has sent your final bill, and they'll only be able to do that after the next time they read your meter. Therefore, it depends on when your meter is next due to be read. It be up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will also tell your present provider that you are switching away from them. The transfer to the new provider won't happen immediately, because your current provider will have to do a final meter reading. then send you their final bill. Your new provider starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor that feeds the energy to your home continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by the new electricity and gas provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Competition in Adelaide

Ever since the late 1990s Australia's electricity market in has been undergoing a deregulation process. The first step was the establishing of an intra-state electricity network which allowed electricity that is generated in one state to be delivered to customers in another state.

Another stage, which happened sooner in some states, was the breaking up of state owned monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In order to stimulate better competition the market was divided into two types of entities

Distributors have the responsibility for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and maintain the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.

Retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. Each state has from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The market in Adelaide was completely deregulated in July 2013. This meant that, for the first time, customers could switch to another provider that had cheaper prices.

Tips to lower your electricity consumption to save money

Here is a list of easy to implement ways to reduce how much electricity you use

  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise hot or cold air blowing in or leaving through the gaps under doors or around your windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Avoid usage of your clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Turn all your appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, dress for cold weather (beanie, jumper, booties, warm socks).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Close the doors to rooms that you aren't using, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Use less lighting. Use natural lighting where possible, and replace older lighting with LED lights.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening your windows at night-time to allow the cooler air in, then closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating rooms by closing blinds and curtains in rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
