Electricity Market Competition in Victoria

The Australian electricity market has been gradually deregulating since the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation was to establish a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in a different state.

Another stage, which occurred earlier in some states than others, was the breaking up of the state owned electricity monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to produce more competition the energy market was split into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors are responsible for the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises . They own and manage the poles and powerlines, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers are the ones who sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. The states have between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.

On 1 July 2008 , Victoria 's energy market was fully deregulated. This meant that consumers could now switch to the provider that had cheaper electricity prices.

Electricity in Victoria is supplied by the following distributors

  • Citipower
Citipower distributes electricity in Melbourne City and inner suburbs.
  • Jemena
Jemena provides electricity in the south-western and northern suburbs of Melbourne.
  • Powercor Australia
Powercor delivers electricity to the western Victoria and western suburbs of Melbourne.
  • Ausnet Services
AusNet Services distributes electricity to the outer northern & eastern suburbs of Melbourne and eastern Victoria.
  • United Energy Distribution
United Energy distributes electricity in the southern suburbs of Melbourne and in the Mornington Peninsula.

Tips to lower your energy consumption to save on your bills

Here are a few easy to implement ways to reduce how much you spend on energy

  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air entering or escaping through gaps under doors or around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, dress for the weather (beanie, booties, warm socks, jumper).
  • Turn off all appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Avoid use of your clothes dryer. Hang your clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating rooms by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Reduce the use of lights. Use natural light more often.
  • Reduce air conditioning use by opening your windows in the evening allow the cooler air in, and shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Close doors to areas of your home that you don't use, so you only cool or heat a smaller area.

FAQ about switching energy providers

This section contains frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and you've chosen to switch energy providers.

It's okay if you change your mind because your new energy provider allows you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days during which you can change your mind and remain with your current energy provider.
No. You won't need to do any of that. The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). That distributor continues to supply the energy to your premises even when you switch over to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your energy bills, however, they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase energy directly from your distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your energy supply because the underlying connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, often in less than 24 hours. But the actual switchover will not happen until your old provider has issued you a final bill, and they can't do that until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how long until your next meter reading. It could take up to three months.
We'll sign you up with your new energy provider, and will tell your current provider of your move away from them. The changeover to the new provider will not happen straight away, though, because the old provider has to do one final meter reading. then issue you their final bill. Your new provider will begin charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who supplies the energy to your premises will continue to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by your new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
