Electricity Market Competition in Victoria

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a deregulation since the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in a different state.

The next step, which happened sooner in some states than others, was the dividing up of the state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to create better competition the energy market was divided into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors have the responsibility for the delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers sell the electricity to the customers and are responsible for billing. The states have from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

Victoria 's electricity market was completely deregulated on 1 July 2008 . This enabled consumers to change to the provider that had the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in Victoria is provided by the following five distributors

  • Ausnet Services
AusNet Services distributes electricity to the eastern outer & northern suburbs of Melbourne and eastern Victoria.
  • Citipower
Citipower supplies electricity throughout Melbourne City and inner suburbs.
  • Powercor Australia
Powercor provides electricity in the western suburbs of Melbourne and western Victoria.
  • Jemena
Jemena distributes electricity to the south-western and northern suburbs of Melbourne.
  • United Energy Distribution
United Energy distributes electricity in the Mornington Peninsula and the southern suburbs of Melbourne.

Tips to reduce your energy consumption and lower your bills

Here are some easily implemented tips for reducing your usage of energy

  • Turn off all your appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Reduce draughts. Minimise hot or cold air getting in or out via gaps under doors and around windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Use your clothes dryer less often. Dry clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Dress for cold weather, instead of turning on the heater (beanie, warm socks, jumper, booties).
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows during the night to allow the cool air in, then shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Reduce the use of lights by using natural light where possible.
  • Close doors to areas of your home that you aren't using, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Stop the hot sun from over-heating your house by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and you have made the decision that you want to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new energy provider must give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and go back to your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply energy to your house if you change to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your energy bills, however, they buy the energy at wholesale prices from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy energy directly from a distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, your energy supply won't be interrupted because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often within 24 hours. However, the final switchover can't take place until after your present provider has issued your final bill, and they can't do that until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how long until your next meter reading. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will inform your present provider of your move away from them. The actual transfer to your new provider will not happen straight away, though, because your current provider needs to do a final meter reading. and then send you their final bill. The new provider begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor who supplies the energy to your home continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. However, we will receive a commission from your new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
