FAQ about switching energy providers
Here are some questions and answers about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and have made the decision you want to switch energy providers.
If you change your mind that's okay because
your new energy provider has to give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period,
that means you that have ten days during which you can cancel the process and go back to your old
energy provider.
No, Absolutely not!
The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer).
This distributor will continue to supply energy to your house
when you change to another energy retailer.
It is the retailer that issues your
energy bills, however, they buy the energy at wholesale prices from the distributor and
resell it to you. You can't purchase energy directly from the distributor,
you have to purchase it from an energy retailer.
You can be certain that your energy supply will not be interrupted when you switch retailers,
because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly,
often within 24 hours.
However, the final switchover
can't happen until after
your current provider has sent you your final bill,
and they can't do that until they've taken a final meter reading.
Therefore, it depends on
when your meter is next due to be read. It could take as long as three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your
new energy provider, and we'll also notify
the current provider of your move away from them.
The actual switch to the new provider
won't happen immediately, because the current provider
needs to read your meter again, one final time.

Here are a few easily implemented tips for reducing your expenditure on energy
- Turn your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Use your clothes dryer less frequently. Hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
- Minimise draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or out through gaps under doors and around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
- Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather, instead of turning on the heater (booties, warm socks, beanie, jumper).
- Minimise air conditioning usage by opening the windows at night-time to let the cool air in, and then closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.
- Stop the sun over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
- Use less lighting by making use of the available natural light.
- Close doors to areas of the house that aren't in use, so you just cool or heat a smaller space.
