6 Tips To Improve Your Home WiFi Strength

Is your home WiFi signal strength causing frustration? Slow speeds making it hard to download files, stream movies, or play video games? It's common for your WiFi connection to work too slowly or to drop out altogether if you have a weak signal. Luckily, there are things you can do to improve your WiFi strength at home. We've compiled our top six tips for getting your home internet speed up to scratch.

1) Limit The Number Of Users On Your Network

Lots of people using the same internet connection at once? Multiple devices on the network can cause it to become overloaded. This is especially true when members of the same household are connecting to the WiFi from all over the house. If there are any devices connected that aren't in use-for example, an extra computer in the study, or a gaming console in a kid's bedroom - consider removing them from the network until they are being used.

2) Consider The Location Of Your Router

Is your WiFi router hidden in a back room or tucked away behind ornaments on a shelf? For a better WiFi signal, move your router into a central location within your house. Usually the lounge or family room work best. A router might not look the best when out on display, but it's better than having to battle a slow internet connection every day! Additionally, keep your WiFi away from any other home appliances that could cause interference with the signal, such as televisions, microwaves and cordless phones.

3) Change The Channel

Did you know that wireless routers operate on a number of channels? If you live in a densely populated area, such as an apartment block, your WiFi speed may be due to having too many other people set up on the same channel as you. Simply swapping to a different channel that isn't being used by your neighbours could solve your WiFi strength issues. Luckily, finding a new one is easy using Microsoft's WiFi Analyser tool.

4) Reboot Regularly

When your WiFi isn't working as it should be, rebooting the modem or router can often solve the problem. If you find that doing this is disruptive to your day, consider an automatic reboot

schedule that will keep your WiFi running smoothly and not cause any problems during the times you're trying to use it. You can set your modern for an overnight automatic reboot at a regular schedule.

5) Use Passwords

Can't work out the cause of your slow internet speed? It might be that your network is being used by more people than you think! WiFi connections that aren't password protected are often taken advantage of, with neighbours and other people siphoning your connection for their own internet access. Always use a password on your WiFi, and consider changing it if you suspect anyone else is online.

6) Upgrade Your Equipment

Tried all of the above and your WiFi still isn't cutting it? It could be that you just need a newer, better router. Outdated technology will struggle to keep up with modern internet usage, so if you haven't bought a new router in a while, it's time for an upgrade!
