FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and you have made the decision that you'd like to change electricity and gas providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity and gas provider will give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and remain with your current energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). That distributor continues to supply electricity and gas to your premises even when you change to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity and gas bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity and gas directly from your distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be sure that your electricity and gas supply will not be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. But the final switchover cannot happen until after your old provider has sent your final bill, and they'll only be able to do that after your next meter reading. So, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It be up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we'll also tell your present provider that you're changing providers. The transfer to your new provider will not happen immediately, though, because your current provider will have to do one final meter reading. and then send you a final bill. The new provider will begin charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that supplies the energy to your home will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. Instead, we will receive a commission from the new electricity and gas provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Competition in Brisbane

Ever since the late 1990s Australia's electricity market in has been gradually deregulating. The first stage involved establishing an intra-state electricity grid which allowed electricity that was generated in one state to be sold to customers in a different state.

Another stage, which occurred sooner in some states, was the breaking up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In order to stimulate more competition the energy market was split into two levels

Distributors manage the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises. They own and manage the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.

Retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. Every state has from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

Brisbane 's electricity market was fully deregulated in July 2016 . This allowed consumers to change to another provider who had cheaper prices.

There is one distributor that supplies electricity to Brisbane

  • Energex
The Energex network supplies electricity to premises in a region covering about 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, that stretches from the NSW border in the south to Gympie in the north. This includes the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Brisbane, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.

Tips for using less electricity to save money

Here are a few easy to implement tips for reducing your electricity consumption

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, put on warmer clothing (beanie, booties, jumper, warm socks).
  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air blowing in or leaving through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Minimise usage of your clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or instead, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Turn your appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Close doors to areas of the house that you aren't using, so you only have to heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Minimise lighting by using natural light where possible.
  • Stop the sun over-heating rooms by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening the windows in the evening allow the cooler air in, and shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
