Electricity Market Competition in Brisbane
Ever since the late 1990s Australia's electricity market in has been gradually deregulating. The first stage involved establishing an intra-state electricity grid which allowed electricity that was generated in one state to be sold to customers in a different state.
Another stage, which occurred sooner in some states, was the breaking up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In order to stimulate more competition the energy market was split into two levels
Distributors manage the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises. They own and manage the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.
Retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. Every state has from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.
Brisbane 's electricity market was fully deregulated in July 2016 . This allowed consumers to change to another provider who had cheaper prices.
There is one distributor that supplies electricity to Brisbane
- Energex
The Energex network supplies electricity to premises in a region covering about 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, that stretches from the NSW border in the south to Gympie in the north. This includes the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Brisbane, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.
Tips for using less electricity to save money
Here are a few easy to implement tips for reducing your electricity consumption
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Rather than turn on the heater, put on warmer clothing (beanie, booties, jumper, warm socks).
- Eliminate draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air blowing in or leaving through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
- Minimise usage of your clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or instead, use an indoor clothing rack.
- Turn your appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
- Close doors to areas of the house that you aren't using, so you only have to heat or cool a smaller area.
- Minimise lighting by using natural light where possible.
- Stop the sun over-heating rooms by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
- Use less air conditioning by opening the windows in the evening allow the cooler air in, and shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
