FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and you have chosen to switch electricity and gas providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new electricity and gas provider will allow you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to change your mind and go back to your current energy provider.
No. You won't need to do any of that. The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply the electricity and gas to your premises after you switch over to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity and gas bills, but they purchase the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity and gas directly from a distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that when you switch retailers, there won't be any interruption to your electricity and gas supply because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in under 24 hours. However, the actual switchover won't go ahead until your present provider has sent you their final bill, and they will only be able to do that after a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on how soon your meter is next due to be read. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we tell your present provider that you're leaving them. The changeover in providers will not happen straight away, because your current provider has to do a final meter reading. and then issue you their final bill. Your new provider only begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who supplies the energy to your home continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by your new electricity and gas provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Competition in Sydney

Ever since the late 1990s the Australia electricity market in has been undergoing a deregulation. The first stage of deregulation was the establishing of an intra-state electricity network that allowed electricity that is generated in one state to be sold in another state.

Another stage, which happened earlier in some states than others, was the breaking up of the state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In order to produce better competition the energy market was separated into two types of entities

The distributors look after the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.

Retailers are the ones who sell electricity to customers and are responsible for billing. The states have from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

Sydney 's electricity market was fully deregulated in July 2014 . This meant that consumers could, for the first time, switch to the provider who had cheaper electricity prices.

Tips to reduce electricity usage to save money

Here is a list of easily implemented ways to reduce your usage of electricity

  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear warmer clothing (beanie, jumper, warm socks, booties).
  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise hot or cold air entering or escaping through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn off appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Reduce usage of your clothes dryer. Instead, dry clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Prevent the hot sun from over-heating rooms by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Reduce the use of lights. Use natural lighting where possible, and replace old lights with more efficient LED lights.
  • Close doors of rooms that you aren't using, so that you only cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening the windows at night-time to allow the cooler air in, and then shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.
