FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and you have made the decision you want to switch gas and electricity providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new gas and electricity provider will allow you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and remain with your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). That distributor continues to supply gas and electricity to your house when you switch over to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your gas and electricity bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase gas and electricity directly from the distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, your gas and electricity supply will not be interrupted because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. But the final switchover won't happen until your present provider has issued you your final bill, and they will only be able to do that after a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on when your next meter reading takes place. It be up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we'll inform your present provider that you are leaving them. The actual move over to the new provider won't happen straight away, because your current provider needs to do one final meter reading. and then send you a final bill. Your new provider only starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who feeds the energy to your home will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. Instead, we will receive a commission from your new gas and electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Competition in Sydney

From the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia has been gradually deregulating. The first step of deregulation was the establishing of an intra-state electricity network which enabled electricity that was generated in one state to be delivered in another state.

The next step, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the dividing up of state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In order to create more competition the market was separated into two types of entities

The distributors manage the delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.

The retailers sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. States have from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

The market in Sydney was completely deregulated in July 2014 . This meant that customers could, for the first time, switch to whichever provider had the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in Sydney is provided by three distributors

Tips for reducing your electricity consumption to save money

Here are a few easily implemented ways to reduce your expenditure on electricity

  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather (beanie, warm socks, booties, jumper).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Reduce use of your clothes dryer. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Reduce draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air getting in or out through gaps under doors and around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn off your appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening allow the cool air in, and then closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
  • Reduce your use of lights. Use natural lighting where possible.
  • Stop the sun from over-heating your house by closing the blinds and curtains in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Close the doors of rooms that you aren't using, so you only have to heat or cool a smaller space.
