FAQ about switching gas and electricity providers

Here are some questions and answers about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and have made the decision that you'd like to switch gas and electricity providers.

If you change your mind that's okay because your new gas and electricity provider has to give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can change your mind and stay with your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). The distributor continues to supply gas and electricity to your house after you switch to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your gas and electricity bills, but they purchase the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase gas and electricity directly from the distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your gas and electricity supply
The 'paperwork' is all processed quite quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the actual switchover can't go ahead until your present provider has issued you a final bill, and they can't do that until they've taken a final meter reading. Therefore, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with your new energy provider, and will inform your current provider that you're changing providers. The actual transfer to the new provider will not happen immediately, though, because the old provider needs to do a meter reading again, one final time. then send you their final bill. Your new provider only begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that supplies the energy to your premises continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is completely free to you. We will, however, receive a commission from your new gas and electricity provider.

Tips to lower your electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here is a list of easily implemented tips to reduce your expenditure on electricity

  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear warm clothing (jumper, warm socks, booties, beanie).
  • Avoid usage of the clothes dryer. Dry the clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air getting in or out through the gaps under doors and around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn off all appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening windows at night to allow the cool air in, and then shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
  • Close doors to areas of the house that you don't use, so that you only have to heat or cool a smaller space.
  • Minimise lighting. Use natural light more often, and replace older lights with LED lights.
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms where the sun shines in.
