FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and have made the decision that want to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new electricity provider allows you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and stay with your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). The distributor will continue to supply electricity to your house even when you change over to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, however, they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from a distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be certain that your electricity supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the underlying connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often in under 24 hours. But the actual switchover will not happen until after your current provider has sent your final bill, and they will only be able to do that after a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how soon your meter is next due to be read. It could take as long as three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will also notify the current provider that you are leaving them. The actual switch in providers will not happen straight away, because the current provider needs to read your meter one final time. then send you their final bill. The new provider will begin charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who supplies the energy to your house will continue to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. However, we will be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Deregulation in Sydney

Since the late 1990s the electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a gradual deregulation process. The first stage of deregulation was to establish an intra-state electricity grid which enabled electricity produced in one state to be sold in other states.

The next stage, which happened sooner in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned electricity monopolies into several competing entities and then privatising them. In order to create greater competition the energy market was split into two types of entities

Distributors have the responsibility for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, and don't engage directly with customers.

The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and issue bills. The states have between 1 and 3 distributors and up to 30 retailers.

In July 2014 , Sydney 's energy market was fully deregulated. This meant that consumers could now change to another provider who offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Tips for reducing electricity consumption to save on your bills

Here are a few easy to implement ways for reducing your usage of electricity

  • Turn all your appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Eliminate draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or out through gaps under doors or around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Wear warm clothing, instead of turning on the heater (booties, warm socks, jumper, beanie).
  • Use the clothes dryer less frequently. Hang the clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Reduce air conditioning use by opening windows at night to let the cool air in, and shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating your home by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Close the doors of rooms that aren't in use, so that you just cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Reduce the use of lights by making use of the available natural light.
