Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in Qld

Australia's electricity market has been gradually deregulating which began in the late 1990s. The first step was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in another state.

Another stage, which occurred sooner in some states, was the breaking up of state owned monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate more competition the market was divided into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors manage the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises, and they own and maintain the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers Retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and manage the billing. Each state has from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

On 1 July 2016 , South East Queensland 's energy market was completely deregulated. This meant that, for the first time, customers could switch to another provider who had cheaper prices.

Two distributors supply electricity to Queensland

  • Energex
The Energex network supplies electricity to premises in a region covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, which stretches from the NSW border to Gympie in the north. This includes the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Brisbane, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
Ergon Energy distributes electricity to Queensland including rural areas and coastal and the remote communities in outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Tips to lower your electricity consumption to save money

Here is a list of easy to implement ways to reduce your usage of electricity

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air blowing in or leaving through the gaps under doors or around your windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Avoid usage of your clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or instead, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, dress for cold weather (beanie, booties, jumper, warm socks).
  • Turn your appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Close the doors to rooms that you aren't using, so you only have to heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Use less lighting. Use natural lighting where possible, and replace older lighting with LED lights.
  • Stop the sun over-heating rooms by closing blinds and curtains in rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening the windows in the evening allow the cooler air in, then closing them each morning to keep hot air out.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and you have made the decision that you'd like to change electricity providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new electricity provider provides you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and remain with your current energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). That distributor continues to supply electricity to your premises even after you switch over to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from a distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be sure that your electricity supply will not be interrupted when you switch retailers,
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the switchover will not go ahead until your old provider has sent your final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on when your meter is next due to be read. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we'll also tell your present provider that you are switching away from them. The transfer to your new provider won't happen immediately, because your current provider will have to do one final meter reading. then send you their final bill. Your new provider starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor that feeds the energy to your home continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is completely free to you. Instead, we will receive a commission from the new electricity provider.
