Tips to reduce electricity usage to save money
Here is a list of easily implemented ways to reduce your expenditure on electricity
- Reduce usage of your clothes dryer. Instead, dry the clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Rather than turn on the heater, wear warmer clothing (jumper, booties, warm socks, beanie).
- Minimise draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air entering or escaping through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
- Turn your appliances off at the power point when they're not in use.
- Stop the sun over-heating your house by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
- Close doors of rooms that you aren't using, so you just heat or cool a smaller area.
- Reduce the use of lights. Use natural lighting where possible, and replace old lights with more efficient LED lights.
- Minimise air conditioning usage by opening windows at night to allow the cooler air in, and then shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.
