FAQ about switching energy and gas providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and have chosen to change energy and gas providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new energy and gas provider will allow you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can change your mind and stay with your current energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). The distributor continues to supply energy and gas to your premises when you change over to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your energy and gas bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy energy and gas directly from a distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that you won't experience an interruption to your energy and gas supply when you switch retailers,
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often within 24 hours. However, the switchover won't happen until after your old provider has sent you a final bill, and they cannot do that until after your next meter reading. Therefore, it depends on how long until your meter is next due to be read. It could take as long as three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and will also tell the current provider that you're changing providers. The switch to your new provider won't happen straight away, though, because the current provider will have to do a meter reading again, one final time. and then send you their final bill. The new provider only starts charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who feeds the energy to your house continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will receive a commission from your new energy and gas provider.

Tips for reducing your energy usage to save on your bills

Here are a few easily implemented ways for reducing your usage of energy

  • Don't use the clothes dryer as often. Dry the clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air blowing in or leaving through gaps under doors and around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn all appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Dress for cold weather, rather than turn on the heater, (jumper, booties, beanie, warm socks).
  • Close the doors to areas of your home that aren't in use, so that you only have to heat or cool a smaller area.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening the windows at night to allow the cool air in, and then closing them each morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Reduce your use of lights through the use of as much natural light as possible.
  • Prevent the sun over-heating rooms by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
